TAU EMPIRE BEGINS CRUSADE FOR ‘GREATER GOOD’ ON THQTV

Relic reveals the secrets of the Tau

With the motto of ‘Liberating the Galaxy for the Greater Good,’ the efficient, technologically advanced Tau Empire is a mighty and resolute force in the galaxy. The Tau faction’s movie is the first in a series of seven
Here’s what Relic’s lead designer Jonny Ebbert has to say about the Tau, one of the two new races featuring in Dark Crusade:

We've had a lot of fun making the Tau, and we're having even more fun playing them now that they're finally coming together. For those of you who don't know, the Tau is a young, idealistic race who have managed to leap ahead of the other races with their technology. You'll notice that we tried to capture the ‘high-tech utopia’ feel in their architecture, and even in the construction animations for their buildings.

The Tau military is both simple and elegant. They use their technology to overwhelm their opponents with superior range and firepower. They're practically unbeatable in a firefight, and watching them mow down hordes of your co-worker's army is a very satisfying feeling. But the Tau does have a weakness. They're physically frail, and fairly helpless in melee combat, so they have to keep their opponents at a distance. It helps to think of the Tau as ‘glass cannons.’ They have unmatchable range and firepower, but they can't take much punishment.

But don't think of the Tau as a one-trick pony. Their ideology does open up a lot of options for their military. The Tau fight for a concept known as ‘The Greater Good,’ and their goal is to build a galactic empire based on cooperation and understanding. The Tau's enlightened attitude has lured several talented races to join their cause, and the Tau use these races to round out their military. Take the Kroot, for example. The Kroot are a race of savage hand-to-hand fighters who can tie up Tau opponents in melee, while the Tau Fire Warriors cut them down from a distance.

You'll notice that the Tau are ambushed by several Ork Stormboyz in this vignette, and are saved by a squad of Kroot Carnivores. You'll also notice that the Kroot are shameless cannibals, and actually eat the remains of the Stormboyz once the battle is over. This not only replenishes the health of the Kroot, but also increases the maximum health of all Kroot on the battlefield. This is a great way to taunt your opponent after crushing him on the battlefield. "Not only did I thrash your little Space Marines, now I'm having them for lunch!" Seriously good times.
