Frontlines: Fuel of War hands-on preview round-up

"Welcome to the Battlefield of the future. Is Ghost Recon dead and buried?"

Before we say anything at all, we should point out that S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s out tomorrow. So if you like FPS and/or PC games, you know where your focus should be right now. And check the review round up if you're still undecided!

Anyway, there's now another contender for 2007's FPS crown. It's not out for a little while yet, so S.T.A.L.K.E.R. should keep you busy until then; but Frontlines: Fuel of War is advancing... relentlessly so.

Available on Xbox 360 and PS3 as well as PC, it promises to be as cutting edge as its futuristic setting. And indeed, that has been the general verdict of all game journalists lucky enough to have a go...

Playstation 3 Next magazine said it "Truly embraces what it means to be a next-generation title". 360Zine was equally as impressed by its progressive nature, "Frontlines promises to be just that - on the front line of FPS gaming"

360 Gamer proudly declared on its front cover "Welcome to the Battlefield of the future. Is Ghost Recon dead and buried?" Whilst Official Playstation magazine made the beautifully succinct observation: "It's loud. It's fast. It's a toybox stuffed with ultra-sexy future tech, just waiting for you to tear the lid off and start blowing things up six ways of Sunday."

The Xbox 360 press was just as enthusiastic as the PS3ers, with OXM.co.uk pointing out it's "exactly the type of game that Xbox Live clans will eat up" Whilst X360 magazine suggested, matter-of-factly, that "It really is every bit as impressive as you think it is." Before bigging-up the multiplayer aspect, "Move over Battlefield, online warfare just got redefined."

And that Battlefield comparison also appeared elsewhere. Computerandvideogames.com said "Frontlines has the potential to be more fun than vanilla Battlefield ever was." And PS3 echoed that, saying it "looks like a worthy contender to the Battlefield crown."

And it's not just making an impact on next-gen consoles. Even in the PC's FPS stronghold, like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. before it, Frontlines is cutting its own distinctive niche to dominate. Hence the PC Zone comment: "Kaos studios have a few new tricks up their sleeves, and it's these that could make Frontlines the next logical step for the genre."

It all looks rather promising then. Just as Gamespot concluded "Kaos was talking a big game [...] and now it looks like the Manhattan-based developer may well deliver on its promises."

Well, indeed.
