Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War: Dark Crusade review round-up
"It's a gory, giddy delight, with more depth and gameplay than ever."
For RTS fans unfamiliar with Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade, now would be a good time to get acquainted. Pitched as an expansion pack, Dark Crusade sits at an unreasonably reasonable price point; yet with the customer-focused talents of legendary RTS developers, Relic, the title has been plauded as an excellent stand alone product in its own right.
Indeed, the general consensus of reviewers internationally has been that this is a must-have title for existing Dawn of War fans, as well as newcomers. Dark Crusade’s review scores have followed the typical pattern of other Relic products and are, in other words, rather good. Game Vortex led the way with a spectacular 96%. And close behind came a whole army of 90%-ers.
Games Radar, with a 9/10, warned “Brace for impact: grandmaster developer Relic has fired another shot in the battle for strategy gaming supremacy - and this time they intend to redefine what "expansion pack" really means.” And then concluded, “Dark Crusade is an enormous amount of top-drawer content for [the price point], and newcomers may rightly mistake it for a full blown sequel. Highly recommended.”
Yahoo! Games, following with 4.5/5, noted “ [THQ and Relic] should be applauded for creating one of the best expansion packs in a long time. By adding more stuff for you to admire and kill, and more places and ways to do it, Dark Crusade gives the already lively Warhammer RTS universe even more life, personality, blood, and meat. It's a gory, giddy delight, with more depth and gameplay than ever.”
And GamePro, also with 4.5/5, summed up the theme of other reviews across the board: “Fans of the original Dawn of War would be insane not to rush out and add it to their arsenal. Those who've neglected the series thus far would be wise to do so as well--after all, an expansion pack of this quality only comes around every couple years.”
