Set in a fictional future based upon the headlines of today, Frontlines: Fuel Of War brings players into the world's next Great War. As society succumbs to a worldwide energy crisis, a new global depression takes hold. Amidst this desperate backdrop, two superpower alliances emerge. Join the battle on the frontlines of tomorrow as the Western Coalition (US/EU) or the Red Star Alliance (Russia/China).
FRONTLINES: FUEL OF WAR DEVELOPER FEATURE - INFANTRY TACTICS
Martin Raymond, Sr. Game Designer at Kaos Studios walks us through some of the Infantry role and loadout permutations
'Ahh infantry, the heart and soul of any respectable army.
Today we’ll take a look Frontlines: Fuel of War’s roles and loadout system, which allows you to deck out your infantry man with one of 24 possible equipment combos.
When first joining a multiplayer server, you’ll have the opportunity to select both a loadout which gives you your meat and potatoes combat weapons and a role with which you’ll be able to unlock a variety of specialized toys and abilities.
This really opens up the doors to a huge range of personal and team-based strategies; the possibilities are endless but let’s have a look at some of my personal favorites.
“Tank Bane”
Loadout: Spec Op
Role: EMP Tech
Not for the faint of heart, tank bane uses a combo of the EMP rocket launcher to temporarily disable hostile armor and the Spec Op’s stick C4 charges to remove any chance of survival on the enemy’s part. Timing is of the essence with this combo.
“The long distance hunter”
Loadout: Sniper
Role: Drone Tech
Excellent for long-range combat against infantry, the recon tech role will allow you to fly your recon drone over an area and have it highlight any enemy units for you to pick off from a safe distance. If any of them move out of your rifle’s sight, switch back to your drone, hunt the solider down and detonate it when in close enough proximity for a quick kill.
“Clear and secure”
Loadout: Close Combat
Role: Air Support
Best way to ensure a clear and secure area? Bomb it to smithereens with an Osprey strike or Fuel bomb, then move in with the trusty shotgun to finish off any holed up infantrymen.
“The drone killer”
Loadout: Close Combat
Role: EMP Tech
Getting overwhelmed by those pesky drones? In addition to not having his position revealed by recon drones, the EMP Tech automatically has the location of any nearby drones and their operators positions highlighted on their huds. Use the close combat loadout to ensure maximum efficiency as you sneak up on them from behind.
“Master defender”
Loadout: Anti-Vehicle
Role: Ground Support
One of the best choices to keep a base safe from enemy intrusion, a full ranked up ground support guy can deploy mounted weapons to handle both incoming infantry and vehicle units. The loadout grants him a dual mode rocket launcher and landmines to assist in keeping the ground and airways secure for his team.
Squad Strategies
These, of course, are but a few of the possible individual combinations. The best way to win wars in Frontlines: Fuel of war is to coordinate with your teammates. Imagine some of the combos you and your squad could create with the available weapons:
- Have your EMP tech squad mate deploy an EMP generator, disabling any incoming enemy armor and then use your air strike abilities to carpet bomb the lot of them
- Use your assault drone to draw soldiers out of hiding while your sniper takes them out from a distance
- Form a defensive barrier with ground support’s deployable weapons and anti-vehicle backup
